PROMOTER OF FAIRTRADE

Jim Hollyman has been a prime mover in Bolton becoming a Fairtrade town. Born in south Wales, Jim started as an engineering surveyor, but after a few years felt a calling to the ministry and studied theology at London University. He came to Bolton in 1984 as the minister at St Andrew and St George United Reformed Church in St Georges Road. Although he retired in 2001, Jim wanted to stay in the area and he soon became the coordinator of the Bolton Fairtrade group. A campaign was launched to persuade retailers and restaurant owners to offer Fairtrade products, including stunts such as the display of a double bed on Victoria Square with local councillors Bob and Barbara Ronson installed, separated by a human banana. In 2003 Bolton Borough Council passed a supporting resolution and the accreditation of Bolton as one of the first Fairtrade towns was possible, the significance of which has grown over the years. Jim describes Bolton as ‘the human face of Manchester’. He says that Bolton is less frenetic and friendlier, with a down to earth, working background. He also believes that community relations in Bolton are way ahead of other similar places with ethnically diverse populations.
